Questions On Solving Problems Isn t Always Easy - 1136 Words

Solving problems isn’t always easy. In this instance, a ward attendant is not only trying to bring improvement through change but with very reluctant parties that will have to agree for this problem to be resolved. There are several ways to resolve problems. Staff will have to support the ideas this ward attendant proposes or it won’t be successful. Patients will have to participate or the idea will fail. How does the ward attendant accomplish this? A multi-pronged approach, that begins with â€Å"getting to the source of the problem, implementing changes and evaluating the results† (Mandell Schram, pg. 470). The Source To solve any problem, you must identify it. The book quotes a parable that is fitting. A woman is rescuing drowning victims and after the fourth one is saved she stops. When an onlooker questions why she stops she states â€Å"I can’t hang around here all day long rescuing people, I’m going upstream to stop the one who’s throwing them all in† (Mandell Schram, pg. 470). This makes sense because she realizes how futile her efforts are unless she stops the problem at its source. Getting Co-Workers to Follow Her Up-stream The ward attendant is getting resistance from co-workers to implement change. They feel that the patients are too unstable to have a voice in decision making. The ward attendant has officially become a â€Å"change agent† (Mandell Schram, pg. 473).
